Trying out Betty Crockers Oreo truffles mix

You know when you want dessert but you want to put minimal effort in? That’s the ideal market for this product. With only three steps and a couple of minutes, this box mix seems like an easy dessert. I have enjoyed the other Betty Crocker Oreo branded mixes that I’ve tried (especially the lava cake) so I knew we had to give this one a try and I picked it up at Walmart for $5.47.

For this mix you need 3 tablespoons of melted butter and 1 tablespoon of water. You mix that in with the Oreo truffle mix they provide and ta-da, you have truffle dough. The mixture comes across like mostly crushed Oreos and when it comes together it’s very similar in consistency to a graham cracker crust which you’d use for a cheesecake. That makes sense considering a graham cracker crust is made of crushed graham crackers, sugar, and melted butter.

At this point you take the dough and roll it into balls roughly 1 tablespoon sized. My scoop was a little bigger than 1 tablespoon and I got 11 truffles. Once scooped I rolled them into balls. They were not too sticky to handle but if they are, the package says you can refrigerate it for about 20 minutes and once the butter hardens back up it will be easier to roll.

Next you take the provided bag of powdered sugar and sprinkle it on top of the truffles. I used maybe a quarter of the provided powdered sugar and felt they were sufficiently sprinkled like the picture but if I made them again maybe I would put the powdered sugar in a bowl and roll them in it. It felt odd throwing the rest away but I tasted it and it tasted like there was more to the package than just powdered sugar so at that point, I listened to the instructions and discarded the rest.

Flavor wise, the powdered sugar didn’t add anything. These tasted like crushed Oreos, and came across like crunchy cake pops. They were good and hit the quick dessert spot. Not phenomenal but I’d eat them again. However, I wouldn’t pay the price again. $5.47 for 12 truffles? That’s ridiculous. After reviewing and buying a number of box mixes I really feel this product is worth maybe $2.50. Maybe. The entire Oreo line of Betty Crocker products is pricey and it’s pretty clear to me that is due to the big names pairing up and releasing these box mixes. Just another questionable decision from Betty Crocker in my opinion.

I love Oreos so this sounds like a perfect treat. 11 truffles for $5.50 definitely sounds overpriced though so I will wait for a sale. Thanks once again for the honest review.
