While doing some grocery shopping this box mix caught my attention. I rolled my eyes, wrote it off as a gimmick, and threw it in the cart to test out here. I can’t imagine anyone is going to the store to buy a mix for this, it is probably only sold to people like me who can’t help but wonder if it is actually any good. I bought the chocolate cookie with raspberry filling but also saw a caramel filled chocolate chip cookie.
Looking over the instructions, this seems like an easy recipe. You add in softened butter and an egg. You mix that all together and the raspberry filling is pre-made. I expected this to be a quick easy job but wow was I wrong.
I creamed the mixture together as instructed and was immediately skeptical of this cookie dough. It was a little but thicker than a brownie batter should be and nowhere near the thickness of a dough. It was a very tasty dough however. It had an artificial vanilla taste that was the most prominent flavor but it went well with the cocoa.
The next step was to “form” the dough into 10 balls. When I read this I expected to be able to shape cookie dough balls in my hands but this mixture was way too sticky to do that. I used a cookie scoop and had to spray it with oil before scooping so that it didn’t stick to the scoop. I only had a small size so I used 1.5 scoops per cookie and ended up with 12 cookies. After this you are supposed to make an indent with you thumb to fill with the raspberry. There was no way I could use my thumb for this, I would be covered in dough! I chose to use a tablespoon sprayed in oil and made the indents. Even with the oil spray this was no easy task. Everything was so sticky, this dough ended up all over every surface in my kitchen.
The raspberry filling is premade which is convenient and nice after having to shape the cookies took forever. The raspberry filling is the consistency of a jam but it has an artificial raspberry taste, unlike jam. It reminded me of the filling they put in donuts. It was like you were eating an unflavored jelly and then the after taste was strongly raspberry and which was an odd tasting experience. I evenly distributed this filling into the 12 cookies and then had to close the cookies up around the jam. Dear reader, I do not wish this task on anyone. This was messy and difficult and so inconvenient.
Once all the cookies were filled and sealed up I put them in the oven for 12 minutes and then they were done. Making 12 and not 10 I knew I ran the risk of them being too big and unsurprisingly almost every single cookie was touching and baked together. This does not affect the cookie quality, just the aesthetics.
Once cooled, I split a cookie open and the filling was evenly spread in the middle. It looked good and from the outside you have no idea there is any filling. I took a bite from the middle and was surprised at how tasty these were. Chocolate and raspberry absolutely belong together but I would never have imagined filling a cookie with this flavor combo! These cookies were really good and just the right amount of crunchy with a soft middle. The cocoa isn’t very strong so the flavors really come together rather than showing up separately.
I have to say that this box mix makes a good fake but realistically no one is looking up a recipe for a chocolate cookie filled with raspberry jam. It is unique but I can’t see myself purchasing this mix again. It was fun to test out but it won’t become a go-to dessert for me.
This mix as prepared was 2020 calories. If you split the mix into 10 cookies as the box suggests it is 202 calories per cookie. If you split it up into 12 cookies as I did this makes each cookie 168 calories. I want to note that this box claims that a serving is ½ of a cookie which is just absurd. Nobody is eating ½ a cookie as a serving. Nobody.

Thanks for being daring and reviewing this. I would have never looked twice at this mix on the store shelves but based on your review I am compelled to go find the Carmel/Chocolate Chip mix.
