Trying out Betty Crocker’s Soft Baked Peppermint Sugar Cookie mix

Peppermint always finds it’s way onto my Christmas cookie platter. Nothing feels quite as festive to me as peppermint. When a friend told me about this mix, I knew I had to find it right away. Online, I found the Smith’s near me sold the mix so I went in and after circling the store multiple times and asking a store employee, I finally found this mix hidden at the bottom of one of their hundreds of holiday endcap displays. I traditionally pair peppermint flavor with chocolate but Betty Crocker has paired peppermint with sugar cookies so let’s see how these cookies come out.

Just like every other Betty Crocker cookie mix we have tried, it only requires butter, eggs, and a tablespoon of water. It requires very minimal preparation, just mix the ingredients with the provided powdered mixture and you have yourself a cookie dough. The dough was tasty, it was just a sugar cookie with hard chunks of peppermint candy. I had expected peppermint extract or something to make it more flavorful but it didn’t taste like anything of the sorts had been added to this mix.

The mix calls for cookies the size of a rounded tablespoon so I used my 1 tablespoon sized cookie scoop. They did say to scoop the dough and then roll it into balls but this was a sticky cookie dough, I knew there was no chance I could actually roll this dough into a ball so I opted to just scoop it and accept it as user error if they came out as the wrong shape. I was able to get 26 cookies scooped out which was way more than the 17 servings they said it would make.

This box recipe has two different bake temperatures, one is 350F, the other is lower and designed for a non stick baking pan so I used that one, which was 325F. I put the cookies in the oven to bake. The package calls for 13 to 15 minutes but I don’t trust Betty Crocker one bit. I started checking the cookies at 9 minutes and they weren’t done until 13 minutes. I was actually flabbergasted to see this considering their previous cookie mixes we’ve tested have had painfully inaccurate bake times. I had to confirm this was right with the second pan of cookies and sure enough it was. I am unsure what caused them to provide two different bake temps for this particular mix but it definitely worked in my favor.

Remember how I didn’t roll out these cookies? You couldn’t tell. They were perfectly rounded, puffed up, and uniform in shape. They looked great. Slightly browned sugar cookies with crush peppermint candy mixed in. These cookies were nice to look at and even better to eat. As a peppermint lover, I felt like the peppermint was just the right amount, leaning towards subtle in flavor. It didn’t overwhelm the sugar cookie. The crunch of the peppermint remained as well and texturally, these cookies were fantastic. Soft with the right amount of crunch. This cookie mix is absolutely going to be part of my Christmas cookie platter. Simple, easy, and tasty. If you see this mix in stores, I definitely recommend picking it up, it’s perfect for enjoying at home or taking to a holiday party.

This mix as prepared was 2300 total calories. If divided into 26 cookies it makes each cookie 88 calories.

I used to love peppermint all times of the year…in shakes, in ice cream, in coffee and hot chocolate, not just in candy canes. But lately it seems like the artificial flavoring of peppermint in many products has become so overpowering that I usually have one sip/scoop and I am done for the year as it’s just way too strong for my taste. Long story short, I’m very happy to see a product with simple crushed peppermint in it and not some artificial flavoring that assaults my taste buds. I will definitely be adding this mix to my, ‘Must try’ list. Thanks!

Any if I have any self-control I will squirrel away a few boxes for the after season as I’m sure these will disappear with Santa’s sleigh at the end of the year.
