Testing Betty Crocker’s lower sugar brownies

Betty Crocker has brought some “lower sugar” products to the market including a brownie mix and a chocolate chip cookie mix. It’s stated on the front that it’s not a low calorie food but it has 25% less sugar than their supreme brownie mix, no fake sugar or anything similar, just simply less sugar. There’s a lot of sugar in the foods sold in stores so any reduction to unnecessary sugar sounds great to me but it can’t impact the quality. If you have to cut out sugar from somewhere in your daily diet, I don’t think brownies is the first place I’d look. Less sugar is always good though especially if you have dietary restrictions that involve tracking your sugar carefully. I personally have no such restrictions and I eat a lot of brownies so I am excited to dive in and see how the lower sugar claim affects this brownie mix.

Despite the difference in this mix, it has the same ingredient requirements, water, oil, and eggs. It mixed together well and the consistency was perfect. It even contained mini chocolate chips which is the only acceptable brownie mix-in in my opinion. The batter was really tasty, like the kind you want to eat instead of bake. I noticed no difference in taste or sweetness at this point.

Using an 8×8 square pan, the batter went into the oven at 325. The box recommends to bake this size pan for 35-37 minutes but we don’t trust Betty Crocker on this blog, so after checking a few times I found they were finished cooking at 32 minutes. I can’t say I’m suprised, I have come to expect Betty Crocker to provide us with bake times that make over-cooked desserts.

After cooling, I cut the pan into 16 pieces. These brownies looked and felt the exact same as the standard brownie mix, nothing seems different at this point which I’m very happy to see.

These brownies were fantastic and right in line with a regular Betty Crocker brownie. I didn’t notice a flavor, consistency, or sweetness change. Each brownies was very soft and fudgey. For a box mix, they’re great and if you’re looking to consume less sugar, these are priced the same as the “fancier” box mix line Betty Crocker has, the Betty Crocker Delights which include things such as the supreme chocolate chunk. However, they do sell a plain brownie mix that is about $1 cheaper, but they are priced at $1.97 and $2.97 at my local walmart so I can’t say I’m mad at these prices.

For those of us that have dietary restrictions 23g of carbs is not really less sugar but they do look great and you can make them for me any time!
