Testing out Martha Whites’ chocolate chocolate chip muffin mix

I love chocolate chocolate chip muffins. Especially the jumbo ones you can find at groceries stores like Costco. They just rock my world every time I eat one. I haven’t attempted to make them myself because they are so readily available at the store that I don’t feel the time is worth it when they are so easy to buy ready to eat. The crisp muffin top and the soft insides are just amazing every time. While wandering the box mix aisle as I frequently do I saw this Mix from Martha White for these muffins and I was excited to give them a try.

This packaging says up front “Just add milk” which is super simple. You combine the baking mix and milk and that’s it. You can put these in a sprayed muffin pan but I chose to use the paper baking cups so that if I shared these with other people it would require less handling. When I made the mix it was super thin and tasted like standard cake mix flavor, nothing exciting, but it left me skeptical.

I want to mention here that this box mix prepared 6 muffins. I really like this because I have a small household and I don’t typically need a dozen of everything I make. 6 sounds perfect for muffins in my household. The packaging also says that 2 muffins is 1 serving and I love this. Most packages make up the dumbest serving size just to get away with however many calories are going into their product. I’ve seen things say that half of a cookie is a serving size, get that out of here. Nobody is really eating half a cookie and thinking that was a good portion size and they’ll save the other half for later. Most people I know are eating multiple cookies if they are standard size. So for this package to acknowledge 2 muffins as a serving size was really neat in my opinion.

This mixture ended up making 7 muffins for me. I baked them for 15 minutes. The package said to cook them until golden brown which seems like maybe they copied these instructions from different muffin flavors because how are you going to tell when a chocolate muffin is golden? Once baked, they looked tasty and had a nice crackly top. Thinking about it now, I should have added more chocolate chips to the top to make my jumbo Costco muffin dreams come true but alas I did not.

I bit into these muffins and was so deeply disappointed. They were fine. That’s it, fine. The chocolate chips sank to the bottom and weren’t noticeable. The muffin was dry proving to me that just milk is not enough to make a good muffin. The flavor was fine too. It wasn’t strongly chocolate and really no flavor notes were noticeable. I won’t be purchasing this mix again. This is not a good fake. I would rather make chocolate chocolate chip muffins from scratch or pick them up at the grocery store. These were not worth it. I will probably give this box mix brand another try in the future with a different flavor in hopes that this was the only disappointment.

This mix as prepared is a total of 905 calories and 14 grams of protein. Divided into 6 muffins it would be 150 calories and 2 grams of protein.

An entire mix that only makes 6 muffins (or 7 in your case)? Was it half the price of other mixes? If not I dont see the value in that for me as I expect a recipe to make at least a dozen. Sounds like it wasn’t a good mix either according to your review so I will continue to hunt the bakery section for those tasty pre-made chocolate chocolate chip muffins just like you.

This mix at Walmart was $1.12. However at the same Walmart you can purchase a 4 pack of these muffins already made for $4.98.
