Trying a simple recipe for hot cocoa rice krispie treats

The newest baking idea seems to be spicing up rice krispie treats and I feel like I’ve seen a whole lot of variations at this point. The fall recipe we tested with a browned butter and spices was beyond amazing and I still think about it so I knew we had to try another one. Since I personally think every cold day needs to be paired with hot cocoa, let’s try out a hot cocoa rice krispie treat and see how it goes!

This recipe is just as easy as regular rice krispie treats and doesn’t require any special steps, just some different ingredients. The typical butter and marshmallows are required here as well as a packet of hot cocoa mix and cocoa rice krispies, not the regular ones.

To begin, you need to melt the marshmallows and butter together in the microwave then mix in the hot cocoa mix. Once that’s combined, mix in the cocoa krispies. That’s really it! Now pour the mixture into a pan, I used a glass 9×13 pan that I sprayed with non stick, and let it set up before cutting and serving (if you can wait that long).

I had some tiny dehydrated marshmallows sitting around so I chose to sprinkle those on top of the pan of rice krispies. However I think some standard mini marshmallows would be perfect sprinkles on top or even mixed in. If I hadn’t used jumbo marshmallows, I would have left out a handful of mini marshmallows and mixed them in during the final step. To me, that would be the perfect extra touch to make it present as hot cocoa rice krispies.

After an hour, I cut into the pan. The rice krispies were still sticky and not quite set up yet but that doesn’t even matter because they were delicious. These chocolate rice krispie treats are next level, why have I never thought of using cocoa krispies before now? Next time you crave rice krispie treats, you seriously have to give this a try. No extra effort is required for this elevated version of the original.

I was a devoted fan of the original recipe Rice Krispy treat…until I tried Salted Caramel Krispy treats. Then I became open minded to all flavors.
Now, if I just had enough self control to not finish the entire pan I would be better off but they are just too darned tasty.
