Trying out Krusteaz’s Snickerdoodle cookie box mix

Before this blog journey, I hadn’t used any cookie box mixes. I have been making cookies from scratch for as long as I can remember so for me, mixing up cookie dough is so easy that I don’t think twice. I always have the ingredients on hand and can whip them up in a few minutes then store left over cookie dough in the freezer to eat fresh cookies at a later time. Cookie box mixes have proven to be a completely different ballgame so I am excited to try my first Snickerdoodles in box mix form. Krusteaz has proven to be a good box mix company so I have high hopes they can do this well.

Like other cookie box mixes, you only need a softened stick of butter for this and an egg. You mix these and the powdered box mix together into a dough. It’s pretty quick and easy, exactly what you want from a box mix. The powdered mix and then the dough had an odd smell to them, it was almost metallic. It was really off-putting but luckily it didn’t translate into the taste of the dough. The dough was sweet and not very flavorful. It was like a sugar cookie dough, nothing exciting to note.

I had suspected that a snickerdoodle box mix would take a shortcut such as putting cinnamon in the cookie dough to eliminate the next step but Krusteaz did not do this. Inside the box, there was a second packet that had a cinnamon sugar powdered mixture. This is designed for you to roll your cookie dough balls in and fully coat them in cinnamon-sugary goodness. Using a 1 tablespoon sized scoop, I’d scoop up a ball of dough then plop it into the cinnamon sugar, roll it around until evenly coated, and finally place each one on the baking sheet. The box provided information for different sizes of cookie options including cookie bars. For the 1 tablespoon option, they estimated 21 cookies would come out of the dough. I ended up with 23 and had the perfect amount of cinnamon sugar to coat them all which I was very happy to discover.

The box says to bake the cookies at 375 for 8-10 minutes. At 8 minutes, my cookies were ready to come out. This deserve a huge celebration. Shoutout to Krusteaz for being honest and making my day with the correct bake time. This should be the expectation but since all companies lie and provide too long of bake times on their boxes, the bar is on the ground. Krusteaz has pulled through.

These cookies came out visually a little disappointing. They spread a lot and were super flat and almost ugly for a cookie. It had to be less than half the thickness of the pictured cookies on the box. It did have a nice crackle top though. Most snickerdoodle cookie homemade recipes have a long chill period before baking the cookies so I have to wonder if this box mix could have more visually appealing cookies with an hour long refrigeration step added in. It would be out of the norm for a box mix to include a step like that, but I’m telling you as my reader, you should give it a try if you pick up this box mix and I definitely recommend picking up this box mix. The flavor was fantastic, these cookies were 100% a snickerdoodle and a great easy alternative to homemade cookies. Plus, box mix cookies stay overly moist for like ever. As is, these cookies are awesome to make and have around to eat but I think that the appearance needs to be helped before I recommend taking these to a potluck or an event you attend with food.

This cookie dough as prepared totals 2760 calories. If divided into 23 cookies, each would be 120 calories.
