When it comes to chocolate chip cookies, every baker has their own version. You can make a chocolate chip cookie in so many different ways and still at it’s core, it’s a great cookie. Even bad chocolate chip cookies are good. But here, we are looking for the best, not the worst. Together we have tried box mixes from Ghirardelli, Betty Crocker, and now we are trying Krusteaz’s triple chocolate chunk cookie box mix. I have really enjoyed Krusteaz’s products in the past so I have my expectations set high already. Let’s see how it does.

This box is pretty standard. You need an egg and a stick of butter to create the cookie dough. I mixed it all up and got a much stickier dough than I would expect. It was sticking to the bowl, the utensils, and my fingers which isn’t ideal for cookie dough. Despite the consistency, the taste of it was good. It tasted almost like it was made with shortening which obviously, we know it wasn’t because we added in the butter ourselves. It just didn’t have an exciting flavor but it was still good cookie dough to eat. You could definitely add some flavor depth with some vanilla bean paste but I was sticking to the box directions and didn’t add any in myself.

Scooping the cookie dough with a 1 tablespoon sized scoop, it resulted in 20 cookies (after eating some of the dough). The box claims it will make 21 cookies this size so this seems accurate to me however, 21 cookies is a weird number. Cookies typically get grouped by the dozen, or even half dozen, so for this mix to not make 12 or 24 feels odd to me but at least they provided realistic expectations. It just seems like box mixes these days are making less baked goods than I expect them to but I haven’t used this particular box mix in the past so I can’t say if it is a different amount or the same.

These cookies went in the oven at 375 degrees on a 9×13 baking sheet. On the box, Krusteaz listed the bake time at 8-10 minutes and at 8 minutes they were cooked perfectly. After trying many different desserts in box mix form, I have found that Krusteaz doesn’t lie to their customers about bake times and provides accurate details on their packaging. I have yet to come across another company who has provided more than one accurate bake time which is disappointing to say the least. This fact alone really puts Krusteaz on a high pedestal for me.

At 8 minutes, I pulled the cookies out of the oven and found they had spread quite a bit and weren’t close to the pretty cookies on the packaging. I suspect this has a lot to do with the dough being super soft. If you chilled this dough in the fridge for an hour and let it stiffen up before scooping and baking, these will likely come out closer to the image on the box. For following the directions so well, it was sad to see such an ugly and boring looking cookie come out of this mix when the picture promises perfect and pretty cookies. Luckily when it comes to cookies, looks aren’t everything.

Despite their sad appearance, these cookies were really enjoyable to eat. They definitely still tasted like a box mix cookie but a good box mix cookie. They had a nice flavor and the perfect ratio of chocolate chunk to cookie and of course they held that unnatural moistness in them that sets box mix cookies apart. I typically prefer chocolate chunks over chips but in this cookie, I didn’t even notice that they were chunks. They didn’t stand out to me but definitely made me grab this box mix over others on the shelf. I enjoyed this box mix and would absolutely pick it up again if I needed a quick chocolate chip cookie.

This box mix as prepared is 2760 calories. If divided into 20 cookies it is 138 calories per cookie.

Krusteaz for the win! I love, love, love to make homemade cookies with my family but sometimes you need a box mix fix when time or ingredients are in short supply. It’s good to know Krusteaz doesn’t disaappoint.
