A new and unique mix for donuts from Pillsbury’s Funfetti has made it to the market and I am very excited to give it a try. They make a plain donut with sprinkles, because it is funfetti of course, and they also have a pink and blue colored mix. The colors make it seem like this is marketed towards kids but there’s no reason an adult can’t enjoy a donut mix. This mix was $2.42 at my local Walmart which feels like a good price so let’s dive in and see what you get for that amount.

I actually bought this forever ago and then learned I needed a donut pan to bake in. Typically you roll out the dough, cut out the donut shape, and fry it. I was surprised to learn that was not the case for this mix and I ended up purchasing a silicone donut pan. You can bake these donuts, fry them, or air fry them. The baking and air frying require the donut pan, the standard frying option doesn’t call for a donut pan but only give you the option to make donut holes, not actual donuts, which is disappointing.

This mix calls for eggs, milk, and water. The batter mixed up nicely but was pretty thick which I was not expecting. I tasted the batter and was shocked by how chemically it tested. It was beyond disgusting, it really tasted like something that you should not consume.
Due to the thickness of the batter, I wasn’t sure how to get it into the silicone donut pan. I thought about using a piping bag but had to stop myself because that’s not a normal household item, there is no way Pillsbury is expecting the average donut mix maker to go this route. I resorted to using a spoon. I would scoop a small amount into the donut shape on one side and then repeat for about 3 spoonful’s to fill each donut. It definitely wasn’t efficient but it got the job done. You’re supposed to fill the molds up about 2/3 of the way and looking back, I may have gone a little over that.

For the first batch, I went with the oven method. The donut pan goes into the oven at 375, the box calls for 10-11 minutes but it is important to note here that a silicone pan will cook slower than a metal pan. My pan was done at 10 minutes. The donuts had overflowed so much you couldn’t even see the hole in the middle anymore. When it comes to filling the pan, less is more. I now recommend about 1/2 full instead of the suggested 2/3.

For the second batch I used the air fryer method. This also calls for 375 degrees. I found that I couldn’t fit my whole donut pan into the air fryer and had to only fill 4 donuts and fold the silicone pan up to get it to work but I had to test the comparison, we need to know which one is better, right? After 5 minutes, they were baked and had a much darker brown top. They didn’t rise like crazy like the oven method but still could’ve used a little less batter. With the amount of batter I filled the pans with, I got a total of 14 donuts.

While all the donuts cooled, I made the glaze. They provide a packet of powder that you mix with milk. They say to mix it with 2-3 tablespoons of milk. With 2.5 tablespoons it was pretty thin so I would recommend trying 2. It didn’t taste like much, just a simple glaze but they did add salt to it which I felt made the flavor a little strange and I wish it wasn’t an added ingredient but it wasn’t overwhelming. If you have vanilla extract on hand I think it would make a great addition to this glaze. I spooned the icing over the donuts and dipped them, I didn’t find either method was better than the other so just have fun with it.

These donuts were pretty tasty. They’re cake donuts and really just box mix cake in a donut form, but enjoyable nonetheless. The icing solidified a bit on top which gave it a good texture on top of the delightfully moist donuts. I did prefer the air fried version, they were just a bit better in texture but both were good. I think this mix is fun and there isn’t much like it on the market. It is the only donut mix I can find at my local Walmart and it hits the spot for a cake donut. This is a good dessert and a fun activity to do, I definitely recommend picking up this mix if you’re in the mood for a cake donut.
