Trying a Bread Pudding box mix from Dollar Tree

I frequent box mix aisles in every store but I haven’t seen a mix for bread pudding so imagine my surprise when I found this box mix by Abigail’s Kitchen at dollar tree for $1.25. I really enjoy bread pudding because dry desserts bore me and this is essentially a wet bread that’s baked. I was super excited about this mix I made it almost immediately after buying it.

This mix is really simple. It requires melted butter, an egg, and milk. Mix it together and then add in the bread pudding mix and once combined let it sit for 5 minutes so the bread can absorb the mixture. This is essentially like french toast but baked in an oven with smaller pieces of bread rather than pan fried.

Once the bread has soaked up most of the mixture, you pour it into a loaf pan and put it in the oven to bake at 325° for 18-23 minutes to bake. This is a large range and I was skeptical so I checked on it at 15 minutes but found no golden brown top. I continued to check on it until 26 minutes when I decided it would never become golden brown and pulled it out. It was cooked well and nowhere near golden brown or an overcooked brown which was odd. It’s not typical that a recipe has a bake time that is under what it should be baked at.

This dessert is meant to be enjoyed warm, which is another reason I love it. So I waited just a few minutes before I cut the pan into 4 slices. The mixture didn’t rise at all and stayed pretty much the same shape. The packaging does say that 1/4 of the mixture is a serving and the slices were a good size but 4 only servings feels like a pretty small mix.

The consistency was great and so was the flavor. I really expected to need to add a glaze on top but  it was plenty sweet and really enjoyable. I didn’t taste much of the cinnamon or vanilla that the mix claims to have so I think that when making this again I would add a dash of vanilla and a bit of cinnamon into the mixture to improve the flavor but it’s really good as is. It’s not the best bread pudding I’ve ever had but it really hits the spot for bread pudding and for only $1.25 I would easily keep this in the pantry for a quick sweet treat.

Since this mix was really good, I have been working my way through Abigail’s kitchens various mixes, take a look at my review of their sugar cookie mix.

A four serving pan at a reasonable price like $1.25 seems to me to be a perfect simple treat when you just want to bake something sweet and fill your place with a pleasant aroma. I will add this to my shopping basket. Thanks!

I purchased this box of bread pudding from a Dollar tree in Maryland. I made it and it was quite delicious. I added cranberries to it.
You have to doctor it up a little, to really bring the taste out. Good buy!!
