Duncan Hines recently came out with this new line of crumble bars that consist of blueberry and strawberry versions. These bars are advertised as both a good breakfast bar and a dessert bar. This mix has been calling my name and the second it hit stores near me, I had to jump on it. I haven’t seen anything like this in the box mix world so I am excited to give it a try. I picked up the Blueberry bar mix but my understanding is that they are the same aside from the fruit jam that is including with the mix.

All you need to make this box mix is butter. I don’t think it gets any easier than that. Mix the butter into the dry mix and create a dough like consistency. I was surprised to find this dough was filled with oats, I had no idea this product contained oats, it isn’t advertised on the box nor is it visible in the finished baked good image. This wasn’t a bad thing, it just threw me off.

After setting aside 1/3 of the dough, you take the remaining dough and press it into an 8×8 baking pan. Then you take the packet of blueberry jam from inside the box and spread it evenly over the entire pan of dough. Finally, take the remaining dough and crumble it over the top of the jam in “pea sized pieces”. The process is super simple and so far, I’m a fan of this box mix. No matter how tasty a product is, at the end of the day you picked up a box mix because you wanted something easier than homemade. So far, this product is providing the ease that everyone is looking for.

Next, the pan goes into the oven to bake. The box calls for 26-30 minutes. I kept checking in because I don’t trust box mix bake times and was absolutely shocked when Duncan Hines told the truth and at 28 minutes the pan was perfectly baked with a little browning and the top was set. Duncan has been known to provide inaccurate bake times so I am seriously shocked and impressed with this one. Maybe they finally got the memo that people don’t want to overbake their desserts.

After cooling for a bit, I cut the pan into 16 bars. They were very thin which was a bit disappointing. However the flavor and consistency made up for it. The soft bar with a bit of crisp on the edges topped with a warm smooth jam really hit the mark. These blueberry crumble bars were really good and while they made a great dessert, I think they would make a good breakfast snack too. This box mix advertises as using natural fruit and not including artificial coloring or sweeteners so I think this would be a great way to start or end your day.
