Sometimes I see articles about new box mixes being released and by the time they reach stores near me I felt like I dreamed them up. Krusteaz amazes me everytime so I was super excited to learn they had a new mix coming out, cheesecake muffin mix. I saved this mix into my list of products I want to try and then never saw it again anywhere. When it finally showed up in my local Raleys I thought I was hallucinating. I have never bought a mix so fast. I really hope these muffins are as amazing as the other Krusteaz mixes we have tried.

The more I think about it, the more odd I find it that this product does not tell me what flavor the muffins are. Obviously the main attraction is that they are filled with a cheesecake filling, but that’s not the only important detail. Are these vanilla? Plain yellow cake? Something else? The box only says “natural flavor” and this bothers me. The powdered mixture looked a little grey and that bothered me even more because I can’t interpret what is making it this color when I don’t know what flavor they are. I combined the dry mix with eggs, oil, and water and got a slightly grey slightly beige batter. Again, no indicators. It wasn’t until I stuck the batter in my mouth that I got an idea of the flavor. I initially thought it was cinnamon flavored but I checked the ingredients and there was no cinnamon to be seen. The only things I saw were honey and “natural flavor”. It’s a pleasant flavor but I don’t know what it is nor how to describe it to you so you’ll have to take my word for it.

To fill the muffins, you place 1.5 tablespoons of batter into each muffin cavity, place in the center of that about a teaspoon of the premade cheesecake filling, and then cover it with another 1.5 tablespoons of batter. I am concerned about the filling soaking into the cake as it cooks, so I am eager to see how these come out. I had expected the filling to be added after the baking was done but that is not the case. Between the batter and the filling, I had enough for about 13-14 muffins.

The mix calls for baking for 16-19 minutes. At 16 minutes exactly I found the muffins baked perfectly and a little browned on top. Krusteaz has impressed me again with an accurate bake time. These muffins smelled and looked amazing at this point.

Once the muffins cooled slightly I tore one open and found the filling perfectly gooey and not baked into the muffin. The cross section looked exactly like the picture on the box and it looked like a good ratio of muffin to filling. The flavor was still a mystery to me but these are very tasty muffins. The filling aspect is considered a first of its kind for muffin mixes and Krusteaz pulled it off in a fantastic way. I would happily buy this mix again.
