When I came across this mix I got really excited because the brownies on the package look a lot like cosmic brownies. I knew we had to immediately try this out and see if it gave off cosmic brownie vibes or not. This mix was hidden away on the bottom shelf at my grocery store so I am unsure how long I have overlooked it for but I don’t believe it is new. I expect since Funfetti is a branch off of Pillsbury that these brownies will simply be Pillsbury brownies with the rainbow chocolate candy bits.

To make this mix, all you need is oil, water and two eggs. It’s as simple as any other brownie mix. You combine all the ingredients and pour the batter into the pan. I went with an 8×8 square pan as it is my preferred size but you can also do a 9×9 or a 13×9, all cook times are provided on the back of the box. After your batter is poured into the pan, you then sprinkle the candy bits all over the top of the brownie batter. It definitely seems more like a cosmic brownie with them just being on the top rather than mixed in. The only thing we’re missing at this rate is the soft chocolatey frosting.

As for the batter, it is really tasty and has a really good chocolate flavor, the kind of batter you’d rather eat than bake. I felt as though there is actually a good amount of batter to sufficiently fill an 8×8 pan. Based on the amount of batter in the pan I can safely assume we’re not getting any sad, thin brownies from this mix.

For the 8×8 pan size this box calls for baking at 350° for 45-50 minutes but with my lack of faith in the box mix industry, I put them in to bake for 38 minutes before I checked on them. At 41 minutes the toothpick came out clean and they were ready to come out. I expected a worse bake time but it’s still inaccurate so I’m not impressed.

The colorful candy bits shifted during the baking and the finally product isn’t as cute as the packaging shows. Then, despite using a plastic knife to cut the brownies, they ripped up and got so ugly they are no longer presentable. The candy bits on the top melted a bit into a crust that ripped apart instead of a smooth cut.

So these brownies are average box mix brownies. There’s nothing exciting to it. The flavor is fine, the consistency is fine. They aren’t dry and sad but they aren’t blow your mind fudgy. The flavor is mild and matches every other bland boring brownie box mix. The candy bits on top have a slight crunch which is nice and its a cute touch so if you want an average box mix with rainbow candy bits, this is the mix for you. For me, I wouldn’t purchase it again. I’d rather purchase the candy bits and put them on top of an amazing brownie mix.
